{"id":38185,"date":"2026-01-07T18:24:23","date_gmt":"2026-01-07T09:24:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seasiaonline.com\/?p=38185"},"modified":"2026-01-07T18:24:23","modified_gmt":"2026-01-07T09:24:23","slug":"a-huge-crowd-unites-for-a-memorable-start-to-2026","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seasiaonline.com\/?p=38185","title":{"rendered":"A huge crowd unites for a memorable start to 2026"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Sydney\u00a0has united\u00a0in a spirit of unity and celebration welcoming\u00a02026 with a spectacular\u00a0New Year\u2019s Eve\u00a0show\u00a0on its famous harbour.Nearly\u00a0a\u00a0million people are estimated to have come\u00a0together\u00a0on the night\u00a0for an incredible fireworks display that\u00a0left crowds in awe.\u00a0People across the foreshore also\u00a0observed\u00a0a minute\u2019s silence\u00a0at 11pm\u00a0remembering the victims of the Bondi terror attack.\u00a0\u201cNew Year\u2019s Eve is about more than just fireworks\u00a0and\u00a0once again\u00a0we showed the best\u00a0of Sydney.\u00a0It was a true reflection of who we are \u2013 a diverse,\u00a0inclusive\u00a0and creative\u00a0city,\u201d\u00a0Lord Mayor of Sydney, Clover Moore AO said.\u00a0\u201cI was\u00a0truly impressed\u00a0by the phenomenal New Year\u2019s Eve show that\u00a0brought together fireworks, music,\u00a0lights\u00a0and pylon projections\u00a0into a\u00a0show Sydney will be proud of.\u00a0\u201cIn a show of support for the Jewish community, we respectfully marked the horrific attack in Bondi that has brought so much sorrow to Sydney over the last few weeks.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI was moved\u00a0to see people right across the harbour embrace the moment of\u00a0unity, showing the world\u00a0we will not let this hateful act of terror divide us.\u00a0We are a respectful, inclusive and welcoming city, and a home to so many people of different nationalities and faiths. Sydney demonstrated to the world that we stand together as one community.\u201cI\u2019d like to thank our amazing events crew, the thousands of emergency service men and women, security and transport staff, volunteers, as well as our clean up teams who gave up their night to allow us to enjoy the celebrations safely.\u00a0\u00a0\u201cI\u00a0hope New Year\u2019s Eve gave people the chance to end 2025 on a positive note\u00a0and I wish everyone in\u00a0Sydney\u00a0a peaceful, safe\u00a0and prosperous\u00a0start to\u00a02026.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0People across the harbour and watching around the world\u00a0enjoyed\u00a020 minutes of fireworks\u00a0during\u00a0the\u00a09pm\u00a0Calling Country\u00a0and midnight\u00a0shows that\u00a0were\u00a0synched\u00a0to two bespoke soundtracks.\u00a0Nine tonnes of fireworks were shot from the Sydney Harbour Bridge, Sydney Opera House, 6 city centre buildings and 8 platforms on the harbour.\u00a0Dazzling effects launched from 6 aerial pyrotechnic platforms hovering above the water.\u00a0At 11pm, Sydney fell silent as people respectfully marked a minute\u2019s silence for the victims of the Bondi terror attack.\u00a0More than 270 volunteers\u00a0and\u00a02,100 accredited personnel\u00a0worked behind the scenes and on the night.\u00a0Another 100 artists, musicians\u00a0and creatives\u00a0worked on the two shows.\u00a0To get Sydney sparkling as quickly as possible, nearly 100 City of Sydney staff were out in force cleaning our streets and parks throughout the evening and long after crowds had gone home.
