Traditional Owners, UNSW scientists, government and conservation groups join forces to get Gayini wetlands thriving again.<\/p>\n
Gayini \u2013 meaning \u201cwater\u201d in the Nari Nari language \u2013 is part of 80,000 hectares of culturally and ecologically rich land in south-west NSW, owned and managed by the\u00a0Nari Nari Tribal Council<\/a>,\u00a0<\/a>an Aboriginal-led not-for-profit organisation.<\/p>\n Conservation scientists from\u00a0UNSW Sydney\u2019s Centre for Ecosystem Science<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 supported by\u00a0Charles Sturt University<\/a>,\u00a0Commonwealth Environmental Water Holder<\/a>,\u00a0The Nature Conservancy<\/a>, the\u00a0Murray Darling Wetlands Working Group<\/a>, and the\u00a0NSW Biodiversity Conservation Trust<\/a>\u00a0\u2013 are working with the Nari Nari Tribal Council to measure how this landscape can recover after more than two centuries of land and water exploitation \u2013 practices that have led to ecosystem degradation, the spread of invasive species, and the decline or extinction of native flora and fauna.<\/p>\n \u201cBy restoring natural flooding regimes and managing livestock grazing, our collaboration with the Nari Nari Tribal Council is a study of how Country responds when it’s given a new lease on life,\u201d says UNSW’s Professor Richard Kingsford.<\/p>\n For more on Gayini, including striking aerial imagery and on-Country insights from Traditional Owners and scientists, visit UNSW\u2019s interactive feature at:\u00a0https:\/\/news.unsw.edu.au\/en\/gayini-healing-country-supported-by-science<\/a><\/p>\n
