{"id":622,"date":"2024-05-09T15:00:00","date_gmt":"2024-05-09T06:00:00","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/seasiaonline.com\/?p=622"},"modified":"2024-06-30T22:36:59","modified_gmt":"2024-06-30T13:36:59","slug":"empowering-vulnerable-communities-in-hanoi-through-student-led-english-teaching-in-vietnam","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/seasiaonline.com\/?p=622","title":{"rendered":"Empowering vulnerable communities in Hanoi through student-led English teaching in Vietnam"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>With a strong commitment to social purpose, Nord Anglia Education schools are leading the way in Hanoi, creating sustainable social impact initiatives to improve the lives of the country\u2019s most disadvantaged.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bvis-hanoi\">British<br \/>\nVietnamese International School Hanoi<\/a>\u2019s (BVIS Hanoi) student-led social impact project<br \/>\nwith the local floating village achieved international recognition through the <a href=\"https:\/\/iscresearch-headsup.buzzsprout.com\/1830309\/14743396\">International School Award for Community Service<\/a> and as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tes.com\/schools-awards\/international\/winners\">Tes Award Winner for Social Impact<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>But it\u2019s not the<br \/>\nawards that make this project a winner \u2013 it&#8217;s the students, floating village<br \/>\nlocals and wider Hanoi community said the school\u2019s Secondary Assistant Head<br \/>\nPiers Roderick, with the project\u2019s success already leading to numerous others<br \/>\ndeveloping across Hanoi.<\/p>\n<p>As part of this<br \/>\ninitiative, students at <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/\">Nord Anglia<\/a>\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bvis-hanoi\">British Vietnamese<br \/>\nInternational School Hanoi<\/a> created the floating village\u2019s first community<br \/>\nlibrary, and started teaching<br \/>\nEnglish classes to improve the community\u2019s educational, social and economical<br \/>\nopportunities.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/vritimes-public.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/production\/dee2403fafd1565f3761d2aec1cc44b6b3107f4bec6ebc1b5151a58bc7390708\/BVIS%20Hanoi%20-%20Piers.jpg\" alt=\"Piers Roderick,\u00a0Secondary Assistant Head at BVIS Hanoi and his students worked in the Red River Garden Renovation project.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur students led<br \/>\nthis social impact project<br \/>\nfrom the very beginning, learning the importance of reducing inequality, how to<br \/>\nbring about transformative change in their local community, leadership skills<br \/>\nand intercultural awareness, and the power of an inclusive society to help<br \/>\nraise people out of poverty,\u201d said Piers. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cStudents<br \/>\nshould play a key role in their local community. From the age of two, all <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bvis-hanoi\">BVIS<br \/>\nHanoi<\/a> students take part becoming active members of their community, to<br \/>\nhelp those in need, leading to a long-lasting and far-reaching social impact.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/\">Nord Anglia Education<\/a>\u2019s<br \/>\nsecond school in Vietnam\u2019s capital, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bis-hanoi\">British International School Hanoi<br \/>\n(BIS Hanoi)<\/a> is also central in community initiatives.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past two<br \/>\nyears following the pandemic, the school has made focused efforts connecting<br \/>\nand reconnecting with a wide range of NGOs, NPOs, Vietnamese schools and social<br \/>\nenterprises to initiate powerful social impact projects in Hanoi.<\/p>\n<p>In collaboration with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.passerellesnumeriques.org\/en\/our-actions\/vietnam\/\">Passerelles<br \/>\nNumeriques Vietnam<\/a> (PNV), <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bis-hanoi\">BIS<br \/>\nHanoi<\/a> International Baccalaureate (IB) students launched <i>English Chit Chat <\/i>last year, teaching English to PNV<br \/>\ntrainees from disadvantaged backgrounds.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" style=\"width: 100%\" src=\"https:\/\/vritimes-public.s3.ap-southeast-1.amazonaws.com\/production\/adf8b7820d17220272b3f0f2e8720a44f7d34fdba42515338d6c9183b92bb95c\/BIS%20Hanoi%20IB%20student%20teaching%20English.jpg\" alt=\"BIS Hanoi students took the lead on virtual sessions, creating their own lesson plans and tailoring them to the learning capability of each individual trainee from PNV.\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The<b> <\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bis-hanoi\">British International School Hanoi<\/a>\u2019s Community Service<br \/>\nOfficer Linh Huynh said the IB students took the lead on virtual sessions,<br \/>\ncreating their own lesson plans and tailoring them to each individual trainee\u2019s<br \/>\nlearning capability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur students learnt how to be flexible and creative in their delivery,<br \/>\nincluding interactive quizzes and engaging games to enhance the learning<br \/>\nexperience, and showed great enthusiasm, commitment and time management skills<br \/>\nto create the best possible outcome for the trainees and their career prospects,\u201d<br \/>\nMs Linh said. \u201cIt\u2019s been heartwarming to see their improvement and growth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bis-hanoi\">BIS Hanoi<\/a>\u2019s goal for <i>English Chit Chat<\/i> is to<br \/>\nempower others by teaching<br \/>\nEnglish, creating inspirational learning opportunities for Vietnamese students<br \/>\nand trainees who may be struggling to practice a second language, or afford classes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to encourage all learners to have the confidence<br \/>\nto speak up, to ask questions, and to learn from their mistakes. And we love to<br \/>\nsee our <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bis-hanoi\">BIS Hanoi<\/a> students grow and excel in academic performance, while<br \/>\nembracing a kind heart,\u201d said Ms Linh.<\/p>\n<p>A PNV trainee that worked with IB<br \/>\nstudents from the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bis-hanoi\">British International School Hanoi<\/a><b> <\/b>described the experience<br \/>\nas \u201cfun and interactive\u201d:<i> <\/i>[During the lessons, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.nordangliaeducation.com\/bis-hanoi\">BIS Hanoi<\/a><b> <\/b>student]<br \/>\ncreates a supportive learning environment where I feel comfortable making<br \/>\nmistakes. Her personalised approach not only caters to my individual learning<br \/>\nneeds but also keeps me motivated and engaged throughout each session. Thanks<br \/>\nto her guidance, I&#8217;ve made significant strides in improving my English<br \/>\nproficiency, which has also boosted my confidence in speaking English.
